Our football expert dives into the thrilling Telkom Knockout semifinals kicking off on Saturday 18 November 2017.
The Telkom Knockout is heating up with only four incredible teams left standing. This weekend is set for action-packed games as they vie for a spot in the grand final! Bidvest Wits are eager to turn their season around by chasing silverware and must overcome the freshly motivated Kaizer Chiefs to stay in the running.
Meanwhile, the battle between Bloemfontein Celtic and Polokwane City promises loads of excitement as both have shown fantastic form recently. Let’s unpack the thrilling matchups and what to expect!
Saturday 18 November
Bidvest Wits 28/10 | Draw 23/10 | Kaizer Chiefs 9/10
Bidvest Wits are surprisingly second from bottom in the PSL after last season’s stellar performance, capturing both the league and MTN8 titles. Despite a rocky start with five losses in nine games, they did manage a last-minute draw against Kaizer Chiefs, thanks to Amr Gamal. The last meeting also got intense with a post-match spat between Wits’ COO Jonathan Schloss and Chiefs’ coach Steve Komphela.
Kaizer Chiefs are in great shape, undefeated in their last five matches with three wins and two draws. Though their recent game against Chippa United wasn’t flashy, they secured a 1-0 win to move to this semifinal. The captain and goalie Itumeleng Khune, despite a fractured eye socket, played recently with a protective mask and his presence will be vital. With many key players back from national duty, Chiefs are brimming with energy and are favourite to edge out Bidvest Wits.
Sunday 19 November
Polokwane City 14/10 | Draw 2/1 | Bloemfontein Celtic 19/10
Polokwane City had a tough time against Orlando Pirates but triumphed in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, 4-2, after a 2-2 draw. They have also shown recent strong form in the league with three draws and one win in their last four matches. They rely heavily on striker Rodney Ramagalela, the PSL top goalscorer, and October’s Player of the Month. His stunning goal against Mamelodi Sundowns also took home Goal of the Month honours.
Bloemfontein Celtic’s coach Veselin Jelusic was named October’s Coach of the Month after his team secured three wins and a draw in their latest five league games. In this knockout, Celtic have been efficient, defeating tricky opponents like SuperSport United and Platinum Stars. Jelusic credits their resurgence to teamwork, fresh signings, and solid tactical execution. Celtic are the ones to back for a place in the final.
