AC Milan have grown tired with manager Vincenzo Montella and have decided to part ways, handing the reins to fan-favourite Gennaro Gattuso.
This change follows a disappointing 0-0 draw against Torino, leaving the Rossoneri seventh in Serie A, trailing league leaders Napoli by a hefty 18 points.
Gattuso, a former stalwart who devoted 13 glorious seasons to AC Milan’s first team and recently coached their youth squad, was chosen to revive the club’s fortunes.
“AC Milan confirm the departure of Vincenzo Montella,” the club tweeted. “First team management is now entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who steps down from his role as Primavera coach. Wishing him all the best of luck!”
Gattuso isn’t the first ex-player to be promoted to AC Milan’s top job – Clarence Seedorf, Filippo Inzaghi, and Cristian Brocchi also previously held the position, with mixed results.
His coaching journey started as a player-manager at Swiss side Sion in 2013, followed by a brief, challenging tenure at Palermo in Serie B, a contentious spell at financially troubled Greek club OFI Crete, and most recently guiding Pisa to promotion into Serie B before stepping down.
