Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana believes that Premiership clubs urgently need to bring on board striker coaches to help solve the league’s current goal drought.
This season has seen just 168 goals across 172 league matches, translating to less than a goal per game. The crisis was glaringly apparent last weekend when six matches ended without a single goal being scored.
Sikhosana, a renowned goalscorer who famously netted the winning goal in the 1995 CAF Champions League final, told Sowetan Live: “With this current crisis, we really need specialist coaches focused solely on strikers.”
“Where are we struggling the most? It’s in the attack. So why not have dedicated experts who can train and guide our strikers? We have legends like myself and Phil Masinga who could contribute to this cause. This is a real issue that needs addressing.”
“It’s encouraging to see former strikers like Benni McCarthy (Cape Town City coach) and Fadlu Davids (Maritzburg United coach) in coaching roles. Our football is improving in many areas, but finishing and putting the ball in the net is where we trip up.”
