Jose Mourinho branded David De Gea as the “best goalkeeper in the world” after his heroics in Manchester United’s 3-1 win at Arsenal.
Manchester United’s ruthless counter-attacking prowess secured a vital away victory against one of the Premier League’s top six clubs for the very first time under Mourinho’s management.
However, the highlight was undoubtedly David De Gea’s stunning display, as the Spanish goalkeeper made 14 saves in the match — matching a Premier League record.
Among the remarkable stops, De Gea pulled off an incredible double save, first denying Alexandre Lacazette’s shot, then swiftly blocking Alexis Sanchez at point-blank range, leaving fans in awe.
“I told him after the match, what I saw today was the best from a goalkeeper in the world. You need the keeper to be there for you when the team needs him,” said Mourinho.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger echoed this sentiment, calling De Gea the man of the match by a clear margin.
Jesse Lingard’s two goals following Antonio Valencia’s opener clinched the win, while Arsenal’s dominance up front was only rewarded by a single goal from Lacazette.
Unfortunately for United, the match ended on a sour note with Paul Pogba receiving a red card in the second half, ruling him out of the upcoming Manchester derby.
”I think it was a fantastic game. If I was in the stands or at home I would have been sad for the game to finish,” Mourinho commented.
“I didn’t see the tackle. I just know that Paul is frustrated and a bit disappointed with his [France] colleague [Laurent Koscielny] for his reaction because everyone knows Paul is a clean player and it was not his intention.”
