Paul Pogba, the outstanding Manchester United midfielder, has opened up about how Real Madrid tried to swoop in and change his destination back in 2016.
Coming through the ranks at United’s youth academy in 2011, Pogba made a handful of first-team appearances before making a high-profile move to Juventus in 2012. There, he flourished, enjoying an impressive haul of trophies and cementing himself as one of the best midfielders worldwide.
His incredible performances caught the attention of Manchester United’s then-manager, Jose Mourinho, leading to a major transfer back to Old Trafford ahead of the 2016/17 season.
However, Pogba revealed that Los Blancos — fresh off their record 11th European title — also approached him, creating a tough decision. Trusting his gut, he chose United, a decision which has since brought him considerable success, including winning the EFL Cup and Europa League last season.
“To be honest, Real Madrid came to me and I was thinking to go there, and I was thinking to go to Manchester United too,” Pogba shared on the Beyond the Pitch podcast.
“But I always felt it in my heart. My heart told me to come back here [Manchester], I don’t know why, I didn’t know what was going to happen. But I did it, and I don’t regret it. I never regret my choices.”
