Jonhenry Wilson shares compelling reasons why South Africa’s Proteas cricket team needs a specialist seam bowler, rather than an all-rounder, to take on the mantle of the legendary Dale Steyn.
It’s fantastic news that Duanne Olivier has earned his way back into the Test squad, accompanied by the call-up of Lungi Ngidi. It’s puzzling how Olivier initially made way for Chris Morris, given his bowling prowess.
Dale Steyn’s unfortunate injury is a blow, but the Proteas must now plan decisively for life without him. After a year of holding on to hope, it might be time to accept that Steyn may not return to Test cricket.
His successor should be selected purely on bowling ability. While Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo have their roles in limited-overs formats as all-rounders, they shouldn’t be considered as primary replacements for Steyn in Tests.
Olivier and Ngidi, on the other hand, don’t rely heavily on their batting—allowing them to focus on perfecting their seam bowling. Both bring extra pace which adds potency beyond what Phehlukwayo and Morris offer.
Kagiso Rabada currently leads the ICC Test bowler rankings, a testament to his consistency and talent. He truly represents the future of South African fast bowling. There is hope that he will open the bowling alongside either Morkel or Steyn’s replacement in the upcoming second Test against India at Centurion.
Faf du Plessis, after opting to bat first at Newlands and facing criticism, was vindicated by Philander’s devastating spell. Going forward, it might be time to consider batting du Plessis at number three, possibly moving Hashim Amla down a spot. Although losing Amla’s spot isn’t on the cards, a fresh batting order could spark form.
Amla, despite a couple of easy tons against Bangladesh late last year, hasn’t scored a Test century in 20 innings against top-level opposition since January 2016. He struck that memorable 109 at Centurion against England, the same ground scheduled for the Proteas vs India second Test. He’ll be looking to rediscover that form against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and his pace attack.
Watching du Plessis and AB de Villiers batting together in Test matches is always a treat, with Steyn’s presence adding to the excitement. The middle order looks much sturdier when these legends are in the mix.
