5 Talking Points from the PSL This Weekend

Join our football analyst as they unpack the standout moments from an electrifying weekend of PSL football action.

The PSL treated us to a thrilling weekend filled with intense matches that could reshape the end of the season. Orlando Pirates clashed with Mamelodi Sundowns, while the revitalised Free State Stars welcomed title contenders Cape Town City. Relegation-threatened Platinum Stars went toe to toe with Ajax Cape Town. Here are the top five talking points that captured our attention this weekend.
 YESWENA

1. Orlando Pirates finally break their Sundowns curse
After years of struggling to overcome Mamelodi Sundowns since 2014, Orlando Pirates triumphed with a commanding 3-1 victory over the league leaders. It was particularly fascinating that Rulani Mokwena, previously Sundowns’ assistant coach during their 6-0 win against Pirates last year, was now masterminding tactics from the opposite side. His tactical acumen, combined with Milutin Sredojevic’s guidance, has Pirates firing on all cylinders.

Standout performances came from goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane, who kept Sundowns at bay, and Luvuyo Memela, flourishing in the new 3-4-3 formation with three goals in two games. Defeating a powerhouse like Sundowns surely raises the team’s spirits heading forward.

2. Cape Town City still searching for their perfect formula
Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City had high expectations, but the loss of key players has created challenges. The departure of the influential front four – Lehlohonolo Majoro, Lebogang Manyama, Aubrey Ngoma, and Bongolwethu Jayiya – means McCarthy has to rebuild. Every time progress is made, the squad sees another crucial player moved on.
The club must either secure a big signing before the transfer window closes or hope the new signings deliver the spark needed to bring back winning form.

3. AmaZulu face an urgent turnaround
Usuthu’s 2-0 loss to Baroka FC sent a clear warning signal: they are dangerously close to relegation, hovering above Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits solely due to goal difference. This situation demands swift action if they are to avoid the drop.

Having bought Thanda Royal Zulu’s status to secure PSL promotion, a quick fall back to the NFD would be heartbreaking. Currently, AmaZulu have endured eight winless games across competitions. The burning question is whether they will strengthen the squad or opt for a coaching change. Time will tell.

4. SuperSport United face a pressure cooker week in KZN
Matsatsantsa are reeling after star player Jeremy Brockie departed for Mamelodi Sundowns. Now in KwaZulu-Natal, they have three challenging matches against local teams. Their recent defeat to Golden Arrows extended their winless streak to eight games, dropping them to 12th on the league table and just two points above relegation danger. Upcoming fixtures against Maritzburg United and AmaZulu could very well determine Eric Tinkler’s future as coach.

5. Luc Eymael’s coaching magic at Free State Stars
Luc Eymael continues to impress with his tactical prowess, having secured trophies across Africa. After guiding Polokwane City to a top-eight finish, he has taken charge at Free State Stars, who were once relegation-threatened. With a 1-0 win over Cape Town City, Stars – nicknamed Ea Lla Koto – are now second on the table, pushing for the title. Eymael’s record includes leading Gabon’s Missile to their first league title in 2010/11, so his impact is definitely one to watch.
