Get ready as we preview the thrilling CareerBuilder Challenge, teeing off on Thursday 18 January.
The PGA Tour is back from the tropical charm of Hawaii and heads to an event that might not shine as bright as Abu Dhabi’s spectacular tournament, but definitely has its own appeal. The CareerBuilder Challenge, initially known as the Palm Springs Desert Golf Challenge when it began in 1960, made its mark as a five-round Pro-Am event first won by the legendary Arnold Palmer.
Between 1965 and 2012, the tournament was famously called the Bob Hope Classic. Later, with Humana joining as a sponsor, the revamped event gained renewed energy and excitement.
CareerBuilder Challenge | Thursday 18 January – Sunday 21 January | The Stadium Course
This unique Pro-Am rotates among three stunning courses through to Sunday: PGA West TPC Stadium Course, PGA West TPC Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club. Come Sunday, the amateurs bow out, and all eyes focus on the PGA West TPC Stadium Course — where the real contest unfolds. Expect a showcase of aggressive birdie-makers, as the courses tend to be more accommodating during the Pro-Am rounds.
Jon Rahm, ranked world number three, is the market favourite, flourishing historically in desert conditions, even in a field that lacks some star power. Brian Harman appears in fine form, while fan favourites like Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson promise to draw big crowds. Phil Mickelson, the evergreen star, although without a win since his 2013 Open triumph, is motivated to make a strong showing at this event struggling to maintain its broader prestige.

Value Bets to Consider
Phil Mickelson – To Win 22/1, To Place 48/10
Though Mickelson hasn’t clinched a victory since 2013, his flair for making birdies and undeniable class keep him in the mix. After overcoming two surgeries and finishing 21st last season, combined with his history of success before Augusta, Mickelson could still make waves in this field.
Austin Cook 60/1, To Place 13/1
Cook’s birdie prowess suits this tournament’s style, with his recent win at the RSM Classic and a strong track record of top-25 finishes making him a promising contender in this modest field.
Jhonattan Vegas – To Win 66/1, To Place 14/1
Vegas famously won this event in 2011 and is known for his aggressive play on desert resort courses. With recent good form and notable achievements, he could surprise the competition again.
The Player to Beat – Jon Rahm 10/1, To Place 22/10
Rahm’s aggressive style and proven success in desert conditions, coupled with his impressive stats, make him a serious threat and favourite to walk away with the title.
