Cape Town City boss John Comitis has admitted that former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar could be joining their ranks soon.

The 35-year-old maestro, with a storied career at Sunderland, Everton, Borussia Dortmund, and Ajax Amsterdam, is currently a free agent after an unexpected release from Bidvest Wits just six months into a lucrative contract.

Pienaar was spotted at the Cape Town Stadium recently, cheering on the Citizens as they secured a 1-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town in a nail-biting local derby.

John Comitis revealed he’s had a chat with Pienaar, keeping the door wide open for a potential signing.

“Pienaar was at our game and I had a bit of a chat with him,” Comitis told KickOff. “I still need to discuss with Benni [McCarthy, head coach] in our meeting later this Tuesday afternoon.”

Assistant coach Vasili Manousakis added that the club is aiming to bring in two more attacking players to bolster the squad, targeting roles out wide and up front, including the coveted number ten slot.

Among the new recruits is Ugandan winger Allan Kateregga, confirmed on Tuesday morning.

With Bafana veterans Teko Modise and Ayanda Patosi already in the mix for creative midfield roles, the Citizens sit proudly in second place on the PSL log, trailing Mamelodi Sundowns by four points.

Kateregga, aged 29, boasts an impressive record of 54 goals in three seasons with SuperSport United.
