The Hollywoodbets Dolphins face a challenging finish in the Momentum One Day Cup with two crucial round robin matches ahead against the bizhub Highveld Lions and the Multiply Titans. It’s a chance for the team to set the record straight before the semi-finals kick off next week.
Having stumbled in their two recent home games last Friday and Sunday, the Dolphins are determined to bounce back with a win at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead against the Lions on Wednesday. Following that, they’ll head to SuperSport Park in Centurion to take on the top-of-the-table Multiply Titans on Friday.
These recent defeats have dented Durban’s chances of hosting a semi-final, making it essential for them to win both upcoming games to finish strong and possibly claim second place on the log.
Coach Grant Morgan is quick to dismiss any thoughts of complacency, stating, “We haven’t been complacent at all. Our goal was to solidify our top position this past weekend and we planned carefully for the busy schedule ahead.”
“We’ve worked on strengthening partnerships – it’s not just about individual runs but firing as a cohesive unit,” he added. “Every player has contributed, but we need to sync our efforts consistently.”
The squad will be bolstered by the return of Vaughn van Jaarsveld for Wednesday’s match, adding vital depth to the batting line-up. Captain Khaya Zondo reflects on missed opportunities, noting, “The lads need to pinpoint those critical moments where focus is key.
Dane Vilas, our form player, fell in an unusual fashion, and Calvin Savage was dismissed caught behind in a way I rarely see. We need to be extra sharp in taking half chances and be more focused.”
“Panic isn’t the answer. Sticking to the basics and simplifying our game will see the small things align in our favour,” Zondo said with confidence.
Looking ahead to the mid-week encounter and with Friday’s challenge in sight, Morgan believes the team’s mindset remains strong. “The lads are focused and not letting up, especially knowing we’re just steps away from the semis,” he emphasised.
“We’ve improved compared to last year, especially considering our RAM SLAM performance. Our aim is to finish as high as possible, with a clearer margin between wins and losses.”
Adding to the excitement, Hollywoodbets Dolphins have partnered with CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation). CHOC’s mascot will be present at the Kingsmead game on Wednesday to collect donations. Fans are encouraged to wear blue to show support and raise awareness for children battling cancer.
