Race 4: SARAGON(14)
Race 5: MARIO LANZA(7)
Magic Tips Best Bets
Race 2: GIMME HOPE JOHANNA(1)
Jockey: R Munger – Trainer: M De Kock
GIMME HOPE JOHANNA showed blistering speed and great determination when she was just outrun late on her Gauteng debut over a similar trip at the Vaal recently. The former KZN resident would have benefited from that Highveld experience and definitely has room to improve.
TOP BET
Race 4: SARAGON(14)
Jockey: R Munger – Trainer: G Alexander
SARAGON exhibited smart improvement finishing eye-catchingly 3rd behind two useful runners over this course and distance for the second time out. The 5th placed horse, Awfaa, backed up that form with an impressive win shortly after, and impressively, SARAGON’s finishing time was three-tenths of a second faster than the subsequent winner State Trooper, who raced just 35 minutes earlier on the day. This Ideal World filly surely has lots of potential and is the one to beat.
Race 5: MARIO LANZA(7)
Jockey: J V.D. Merwe – Trainer: R Magner
It’s no surprise that the improving stayer MARIO LANZA has a new jockey this outing. The Judpot gelding has a strong chance to better his last performance over a slightly longer trip. He arguably should have finished well ahead of the long-time maiden VOODOO on that day, but today’s rider could make all the difference.
Race 10: MUTRIB(2)
Jockey: R Munger – Trainer: M De Kock
This exciting novice handicap will feature some promising runners and a close finish is highly expected. The De Kock trainee MUTRIB impressed with an explosive finishing burst to clinch a win over seven furlongs on this same track late last month. Although he didn’t beat many that day, the manner of victory was eye-catching and he should relish the extra furlong this time. That said, this imported Street Cry son faces a strong challenge in this tougher field.
VALUE BET
Race 6: ODD ROB(5)
Jockey: R Munger – Trainer: G Alexander
ODD ROB encountered significant traffic problems and wasn’t pushed hard in the final furlong recently but he has the ability to turn things around against a few rivals on this galloping track today. The experienced gelding is only 1.5kgs better off with EQUATOR and arguably should have finished right alongside or ahead of his rival on that occasion.
