The Hollywoodbets Dolphins are all set to face the WSB Cape Cobras for the second time this season in a thrilling Momentum One Day Cup semi-final. The Cape Town clash at PPC Newlands on Wednesday promises high stakes and top-notch cricket action.
As this crucial encounter approaches, the Dolphins have made several changes to their squad. The seasoned Imran Tahir and captain Khaya Zondo will be absent as they join the Proteas squad to prepare for the ODI series against India starting Thursday.
Despite these absences, coach Morgan is confident in the depth and talent of his squad. A welcome boost is the return of spin maestro Keshav Maharaj.
“We have diligent performers in the team throughout the season. Sibz Makhanya is back from injury, and Vaughn van Jaarsveld is fit again,” Morgan shared.
“Keshav took the lead on the field in the previous game against the Titans since Khaya was unavailable, and he will take on the captaincy duties,” added Morgan.
Team selection has been a challenging yet positive task for Morgan all season. With a slightly leaner squad this week, he appreciates having dependable players to call upon.
“The Momentum One Day Cup this season has been competitive – we’ve had to leave out some players who performed well. Calvin Savage and Athi Maposa have impressed but missed some matches due to team balance,” Morgan noted.
“Welcoming Keshav back is fantastic, but it’s always tough to leave out deserving players. Fortunately, we’re in a good space,” he concluded.
This season, the Dolphins and Cobras have clashed five times in white ball cricket, with the Dolphins winning three matches and two games affected by rain. This upcoming match marks their first encounter at Newlands.
Coach Morgan anticipates some adjustment to the pitch conditions for his squad, as Newlands traditionally doesn’t favour spin bowling.
“I’d be surprised if we get a turning wicket – Newlands seldom offers that. We’ll back our tried and tested strategies,” Morgan explained. “If needed, we can field four seam bowlers and still maintain balance. We’re expecting a solid deck to play on and will adapt accordingly.”
The Momentum One Day Cup semi-final kicks off at PPC Newlands at 13:30 on Wednesday, with the prize of a final spot against either the Multiply Titans or the Warriors on Friday, 2 February.
