Big news from the Premier League: Chelsea have just signed the talented defender Emerson Palmieri from Roma for a transfer fee of £17.6 million.
The young Brazilian-born left-back, aged 23, made his way into the UK on Tuesday, underwent his medical successfully, and has now signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues.
Emerson made 36 appearances for Roma last season, although a knee injury sidelined him for the first three months of the current season, limiting him to only two appearances so far. Despite this setback, his defensive versatility and skill have impressed many.
“Joining Chelsea feels like a dream come true. This club has a fantastic history, and I am proud to wear its colours,” Emerson said. “I’ve admired English football since I was 15 – it’s a beautiful game here, played with so much passion.”
Known for his adaptability on the left flank, Emerson transitioned from Brazilian club Santos to Roma in December 2016. After receiving Italian citizenship in 2017, he switched his international allegiance to Italy and has been called up to the national squad multiple times.
At Chelsea, he will don the number 33 jersey and is expected to boost their defensive options as the team pushes forward in both domestic and European competitions.
