The recent Nedbank Cup Last 16 draw on Thursday night has set up some truly tantalising fixtures, with the highlight undoubtedly being the clash between Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates.
Pirates are sitting comfortably in second place on the league table, while Cape Town City are holding fifth spot, just a couple of points adrift – which means this cup tie could see one of the Premier Soccer League’s heavy hitters exit before the quarter-finals.
The Buccaneers previously edged a 1-0 win at home against City in the league’s first round, while last season’s two meetings both ended all square. It’s clear there’s little to split these two sides.
Another all-PSL showdown features Free State Stars facing off against Chippa United on their home turf.
As for Pirates’ Soweto neighbours, Kaizer Chiefs have what appears to be a slightly less daunting task, taking on National First Division side Stellenbosch FC at home. But with cup football known for its surprises, Amakhosi will be wary of any upset.
Mamelodi Sundowns will be overwhelming favourites in their home game against Eastern Cape Second Division team EC Bees.
Bloemfontein Celtic, having knocked out the defending champions SuperSport United last round, will challenge NFD side Richards Bay, while Ubuntu Cape Town, the giant killers over Polokwane City in the last 32, travel to Durban aiming to upset AmaZulu.
