Reflecting back, handing Aiden Markram the captaincy for the ODI clash against India might have been a misstep.
Markram’s brief six-match captaincy stint in one of South Africa’s most high-pressure roles would likely have been far more rewarding with seasoned veterans like Faf du Plessis or AB de Villiers by his side to guide him.
While Hashim Amla offered his wisdom, he didn’t quite match the sharp tactical insight and spirited leadership that du Plessis or de Villiers would have brought to the field.
Unfortunately, Markram now has to bounce back from a heavy five-one series defeat and a frustrating pattern of promising starts marred by an inability to convert those into big scores with the bat.
Unlike other stand-in captains like England’s Jos Buttler, who lifted their game while leading, Markram struggled to reach his potential during the series. Similarly, Australia’s David Warner, deputising for Steven Smith in the recent T20 tri-series, went through a lean patch at the top of the order.
Markram’s scores of nine, eight, 32, 22, 32 and 24 against India showed flashes of promise but ultimately fell short, perhaps distracted by the burden of captaincy.
Veteran Graeme Smith’s assessment of Markram’s leadership offered mixed signals—while not fully confident in Markram’s readiness, Smith stopped short of writing him off, advising patience and support instead.
“I don’t think it was the right decision. It seemed more of a temporary measure rather than a permanent appointment. I would have preferred for him to find his feet in the one-day setup and build confidence with his batting. What was disappointing was the lack of backing from other senior players,” Smith remarked in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Fortunately, Markram skipped the ongoing T20I series against Virat Kohli and his team, with a Test comeback looming. The upcoming Australian Test series presents his true challenge—to open the batting in the longest format and excel.
So far, Markram’s Test experience includes games against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and India. Facing Australia’s fierce pace attack led by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins will be a significantly tougher test.
Unlike previous players like Stephen Cook and Heino Kuhn, Markram isn’t likely to be sidelined after a bad series due to his youth. However, shaking off the disappointment from the ODI series against India is imperative for his growth.
