Cricket Insight: Why Ottis Gibson Should Rethink Chris Morris | Hollywoodbets Sports Blog

Cricket Player in whites throws a ball in

Ottis Gibson will have to take a fresh look at Chris Morris’ role following Morne Morkel’s retirement from international cricket.

Morne Morkel’s announcement came shortly after Chris Morris was omitted from the squad for the initial Test matches against Australia. While this may be acceptable short-term, the Proteas face a significant gap that needs filling immediately.
Chris Morris should undoubtedly be that player, especially considering Dale Steyn’s current form concerns and Vernon Philander nearing the end of his international career. The South African selectors haven’t shown enough confidence in Morris, but now may be the perfect moment to back him fully or reconsider the options altogether.
Although Gibson has criticised Morris’ domestic performances and Faf du Plessis has labelled him inconsistent for a Test seamer, Morris has only had four Test appearances, claiming a dozen wickets at an average of 38.25 — respectable figures given the limited opportunities.
It’s noteworthy that other contenders like Wayne Parnell enjoyed longer opportunities before being sidelined. South Africa could do a lot worse than including Morris in the squad as a potential third seamer. The emerging talent of Junior Dala might pose more of a threat to Morris’ future than current players.
Meanwhile, the call-up of Wiaan Mulder is an intriguing move aimed at giving the young all-rounder exposure to international cricket environments. Mulder, much like Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo, brings all-round abilities but perhaps offers more with the bat and less with the ball. Having only debuted in first-class cricket two years ago at just 20, Mulder’s rise is promising.
His temperament will be tested against top-class opposition like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, and bowling to batsmen like David Warner, but patience is key before passing technical judgement.
South Africa has currently named squads only for the first two Tests in their four-match series against Australia. Selecting Pieter Malan for the later Tests might be a clever ploy, especially if the top order, including Markram and Dean Elgar, struggles. Malan is ranked second in the ongoing Sunfoil Series for runs and big performances ahead of the Tests could seal his spot.
