Eathan Bosch grabbed his third wicket of the innings, sending Mangaliso Mosehle back for 42, leaving the Lions struggling at 213 for 9.
Despite the pressure, a resilient last-wicket partnership between Sean Jamison and Beuran Hendricks fought back, adding 33 runs before Okuhle Cele claimed his third wicket, wrapping up the Lions’ innings at 246.
Jamison contributed 22 runs and Hendricks 10, providing the Lions with a fighting total to build from.
The debutants, Bosch and Cele, were the stars with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 3/43 and 3/19 respectively.
The Dolphins started their innings with a shock as Sarel Erwee fell for a duck in the first over, caught at slip.
From then on, Dane Vilas and Vaughn van Jaarsveld entertained the crowd with some exciting limited overs style batting, amassing 89 runs in just over 12 overs. Van Jaarsveld played a blazing innings, scoring 42 off just 31 balls before falling.
Senuran Muthusamy then joined Vilas as the scoring rate slowed slightly but remained steady.
The duo’s partnership was a massive 150 runs before Vilas was out for a brilliant 128 from 153 deliveries, which included 19 fours and one six, setting the Dolphins up well with the total on 239.
However, the Dolphins faced a slight stumble as captain Khaya Zondo was dismissed first ball and Sibz Makhanya was stumped for three.
Calvin Savage joined the set Muthusamy with the scores tied at 246 for 5.
Muthusamy played a solid knock of 69 before losing his wicket, and Bosch added 13 runs before the close of play.
When play resumes on day three, Savage will be unbeaten on 46, with Prenelan Subrayen yet to open his account.
The Dolphins are set to start Saturday at a strong 318 for 7, looking to build on their advantage.
