Excitement is building as Cape Town City’s coach, the ever-driven Benni McCarthy, prepares to face Bidvest Wits’ savvy boss Gavin Hunt this Saturday at Athlone Stadium. The stakes are high as Benni aims for his fifth triumph over his former mentor this season!
Earlier this season, The Citizens delivered a double blow to The Clever Boys by winning both legs of their MTN8 semi-final. Their dominance wasn’t limited to that challenge; they also tasted league success against Wits in 2017.
“Here’s hoping the student can teach the teacher another lesson! And honestly, if I lose next season, it won’t bother me because I’d have already beaten Gavin five times!”
Their fourth win over the Students came just this February during the Nedbank Cup’s first round, where despite an unconvincing performance, the Mother City side edged out a win by a slender margin.
Reflecting on Hunt, who shaped his early career as a teenager at Seven Stars, McCarthy expressed respect but exuded determination: “I’m never overconfident when facing ‘Hunty’. Gavin’s experience is clear, and Wits are steadily improving. They’re climbing up from the relegation zone, gaining momentum.”
