Betting Bonus Terms Explained: A Rand-Based Checklist

A bonus headline tells you the size of an offer. The conditions determine what you must do, what can be withdrawn and whether the offer is useful to you. You can decline a promotion.

A worked wagering example

Suppose a hypothetical offer gives a R100 bonus with a 20× wagering requirement on the bonus only. The qualifying turnover required is R100 × 20 = R2,000. If the requirement instead applies to a R100 deposit plus the R100 bonus, it becomes R200 × 20 = R4,000.

Turnover means the total value of qualifying bets, not the amount you are guaranteed to keep. You may lose your balance before completing the requirement. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not a live operator offer.

Eight terms to check

  1. Eligibility: new accounts only, age and location restrictions, identity checks and any household limits.
  2. Opt-in and deposit: whether you must activate the offer and whether your payment method qualifies.
  3. Wagering base: bonus only, deposit plus bonus, winnings, or another amount.
  4. Game contribution: a R10 stake at 10% contribution counts as R1 toward the requirement. Some games may contribute nothing.
  5. Maximum stake: exceeding a permitted stake can invalidate bonus winnings under the terms.
  6. Expiry: the deadline to claim, use the credit and complete wagering.
  7. Withdrawal limits: maximum convertible winnings, verification requirements, and what happens if you withdraw early.
  8. Excluded actions: restricted games, markets or betting patterns, and the operator’s dispute process.

Free bets and free spins differ

A free bet may return winnings without returning the promotional stake. Free spins may have a fixed stake, specified games and restrictions on winnings. A deposit match, refund and cash bonus can have different rules. Do not assume the word “free” removes all conditions.

Compare the conditions before the headline

Record the offer URL and date, the required deposit, the maximum you could lose, the wagering base and the deadline. If the terms are unclear, ask the operator before depositing. Avoid an offer that requires more gambling than you had planned.
