Contract Finalized for Second Sphere in Abu Dhabi
Sphere Entertainment has signed a deal to license a second Sphere in the United Arab Emirates
The financially troubled company won’t have to pay a cent to build or operate the venue
Sphere Entertainment announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) to construct and develop a second Sphere in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This agreement is a joint development and partnership arrangement, coupled with a pre-opening services agreement. Through this arrangement, Sphere Entertainment benefits significantly as it won’t need to finance or support the construction of the new venue.
The DCT has acquired the exclusive right to build and operate this new Sphere venue, which comes with a minimum commitment of ten years to construct additional venues across the Middle East and North Africa. Furthermore, the UAE will have full access to Sphere Entertainment’s intellectual property, technology, and related content.
In return, Sphere will gain a one-time franchise initiation fee alongside an annual royalty based on a specific percentage of the total revenue generated by Sphere Abu Dhabi (excluding ticket sales from The Sphere Experience).
The franchise agreement spans an initial term of 25 years from the venue’s opening, with options for DCT to renew for two additional ten-year terms.
Future Prospects and Historical Context
In anticipation of the opening, Sphere Entertainment and DCT are also expected to finalise an operational services agreement. Although specific details about Sphere Abu Dhabi remain sparse, Sphere Entertainment has indicated that it aims to replicate the scale of its Las Vegas counterpart, which boasts an impressive capacity of 18,600 seats and heralded its opening with a residency from U2 in September 2023.
The location within Abu Dhabi is still to be confirmed. Notably, a similar proposal by Sphere Entertainment to establish a second venue in London was rejected in January 2024, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan citing health concerns related to the proposed 17,500 seat venue.
Key Takeaways from the Sphere Abu Dhabi Agreement

- Financial Support: Sphere Entertainment is relieved from the financial burden of building and operating the venue.
- Revenue Sharing: Annual royalties will support Sphere’s ongoing projects.
- Long-Term Partnership: A commitment of at least 25 years with two renewal options enhances stability.
Conclusion
The establishment of Sphere Abu Dhabi represents a strategic venture not just for Sphere Entertainment but for the entertainment landscape in the UAE. This collaboration signifies a shift towards modernising entertainment venues while ensuring that growth and sustainability go hand-in-hand. As new details emerge, all eyes will be on how Sphere will shape the future of entertainment across the region.
