In a stunning achievement, Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned Ballon d’Or winner for the second consecutive year, equalling the incredible record held by Lionel Messi as a five-time recipient of this prestigious honour.
Ronaldo earned this coveted accolade following a spectacular season where he played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s successful defence of their UEFA Champions League title, alongside clinching their first La Liga championship since 2012.
With an impressive tally of 42 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions, Ronaldo’s lethal strike rate drove Los Blancos to double glory, with Barcelona’s Messi finishing as runner-up and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar securing third place.
“This award is something I eagerly anticipate every year,” Ronaldo expressed at the Paris ceremony. “I’m grateful to my Real Madrid teammates and all those who’ve supported me throughout my journey to reach this level.”
Ronaldo first lifted the Ballon d’Or back in 2008 while at Manchester United, with Messi taking the honour the very next year. Since then, these two football giants have dominated the award like no other.
