The Hollywoodbets Dolphins have had a rollercoaster of a RAM SLAM T20 Challenge season, but with back-to-back wins and a home play-off on the cards, the Durban side is brimming with confidence as they gear up for their semi-final clash against the WSB Cape Cobras at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead this Thursday evening.
The Dolphins faced the tough task of securing victories in their last two matches of the ten-round robin stage, having completed only five games so far. Rising to the occasion, they triumphantly defeated the VKB Knights and then the Multiply Titans, securing their spot to host a play-off.
Assistant coach Imraan Khan reflected on their journey: “It was a must-win situation, and we’re incredibly proud of how the boys stepped up. Throughout both games, challenges kept coming at us, but the team handled them with grit and determination. The confidence is sky-high, and we’re excited for the challenges ahead this Thursday.”
Friday’s game saw the Dolphins chase down a solid target of 168 runs in just 17 overs, with Morné van Wyk delivering a spectacular 70 not out. Next, they took on the table-topping Titans and claimed a commanding victory by 89 runs, complete with a bonus point.
Khan added, “We aimed to peak at the right moment as a team. While we’ve got a strong squad, consistency has always been the challenge, but thankfully, we’re hitting form when it counts. Here’s hoping for more standout performances!”
It’s been three years since the Dolphins last lifted the RAM SLAM T20 Challenge trophy, and with seasoned captain Khaya Zondo at the helm, the team is ready to utilise their collective experience to the fullest.
Captain Zondo shared his thoughts: “I value everyone’s input because different situations call for different tactics. I’m very open to suggestions and carefully weigh all options to make the best decision for the team at any point in the game.”
Morné van Wyk’s consistent form has been a beacon of hope, ranking sixth on the run-scorers list with 256 runs in only six innings, at an impressive average of 64 and a strike rate of 152 – a proper momentum boost heading into the play-offs.
Van Wyk stated, “I’ve been disciplined and focused since pre-season, and that effort seems to be paying off. Although I feel I could have scored even more in the four-day format, experience has taught me to keep my head down and stick to the basics. It’s been fantastic to perform when the stakes are high.”
The semi-final showdown between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the WSB Cape Cobras at Kingsmead will determine who advances to the final against either the Multiply Titans or the Warriors this Saturday.
