Epic Springboks vs Wales Clash in Washington DC – 2018 International Rugby Showdown | Hollywoodbets Sports Blog

Mark your calendars! The mighty Springboks will kick off their 2018 international campaign with a landmark Test match against Wales, set to take place in Washington DC, USA, on Saturday 2 June.

This thrilling encounter is especially historic as it’s the first time the Springboks will face a Tier One opponent on neutral soil outside of the Rugby World Cup, a momentous occasion officially confirmed by Rugby International Marketing (RIM), the commercial division of USA Rugby. The battle kicks off at 17h00 (SA time 23h00) at the iconic Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (RFK) in Washington DC.

These two rugby powerhouses have crossed paths 34 times, with the Springboks dominating with 28 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw, achieving an impressive 85% win rate. Despite recent setbacks where Wales clinched the last two clashes in Cardiff, the Boks are ready to reclaim their supremacy.

The announcement was made at a prestigious ceremony hosted by the South African Embassy in Washington DC. The event was graced by South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, and Wales’ First Minister, the Rt. Hon. Carwin Jones AM.

Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby, expressed excitement about taking Springbok rugby to new territories: “This match in Washington is a fantastic opportunity to introduce Springbok rugby to the American audience and significantly grow our fan base. Our last visit to the USA was back in December 2001 when we triumphed over the USA Eagles 43-20 in Houston.”

“Playing in Washington allows us to expand the reach of South African rugby to a potentially massive audience,” said Roux.

“Market research shows the Springboks enjoy a growing worldwide following. This match is the perfect platform to tap into the lucrative American sports market as we gear up for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in July.”

“We’re grateful to the Wales Rugby Union for their efforts in making this match a reality and excited about kicking off what promises to be a challenging and exhilarating international season.”

David Sternberg, CEO of Rugby International Marketing, highlighted the significance of the occasion: “Hosting two top rugby nations in the US capital is a proud moment. We aim to activate a passionate regional rugby community and accelerate the sport’s growth in America.”

RFK Stadium, nestled near the US Capitol, boasts a seating capacity of 45,000 and is set to provide an electric atmosphere for this epic showdown.
