As the Ram Slam T20 Challenge races towards its nail-biting conclusion, now’s the perfect time to assess which stars are shining brightest and lining up for a spot in the Proteas’ Twenty20 International squad.
The South African team is gearing up to face India in the shortest format coming February 2018, with thrilling matches set to take place in Johannesburg, Centurion, and Cape Town – offering selectors a prime opportunity to unearth fresh talent and reinforce the squad.
Players like Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius have firmly planted themselves within the core T20I plans thanks to their standout performances, but several others remain on the cusp, eagerly fighting for their place.
Robbie Frylinck, who debuted in T20 internationals against Bangladesh earlier this year, may not have dazzled in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge yet, but his steady form over time certainly warrants another shot.
Reeza Hendricks should undoubtedly partner Hashim Amla as the opening pair. Despite Mangaliso Mosehle holding the opener spot in October, Hendricks’ recent haul of runs for the Lions forces the selectors to reconsider. Mosehle remains the backup option when Quinton de Kock is unavailable, but with de Kock’s imminent return as the first-choice wicketkeeper, Mosehle’s spot remains under review.
One exciting prospect is Shadley van Schalkwyk, a potential new cap who has consistently ranked among the top domestic T20 bowlers for the past couple of seasons. His trick? A crafty slower ball delivered with deceptive cunning.
Of course, Van Schalkwyk needs to fine-tune his death-over bowling, but with experts like Dane Paterson and head coach Ottis Gibson providing guidance, he and others will be primed to handle the intense pressure in the critical overs 16 to 20. Facing formidable Indian batsmen, keeping cool under fire will be non-negotiable.
Another name to watch is Christiaan Jonker. Should the Proteas decide it’s time to move on from Jon-Jon Smuts, Jonker from the Warriors deserves his chance. Although he has flirted with spots in the Indian and Caribbean Premier Leagues without quite breaking through, it’s hopeful he’ll soon earn notable recognition at home.
With Titans out of the finals and Lions, Knights, and Warriors sidelined, the Ram Slam T20 Challenge now focuses on the final three teams. Many players mentioned will grab a few more opportunities to impress selectors and earn that coveted call-up. Keep an eye on the Cobras and Dolphins, as both are resurgent contenders for the championship crown.
