Join us as we preview this week’s much-anticipated Honda Classic, set to take place at the PGA National Champion Course in sunny Florida from 22 to 25 February.
The PGA Tour makes its way to the East Coast for the 46th Honda Classic, a tournament steeped in history. Initially called the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic, Honda stepped in as the sponsor in 1982. This year’s tournament holds special significance in light of last week’s tragic school shooting in Florida.
Last year’s thrilling victory belonged to Ricky Fowler, while others such as Rory McIlroy, who won in 2012, have also made their mark here. Notably, this is the 12th year running that the PGA National Champion Course hosts the event, underlining its prestige.
Event: The Honda Classic | Dates: 22 – 25 February | Venue: PGA National Champions Course, Florida
Designed by Tom and George Fazio and extensively renovated by Jack Nicklaus, PGA National is known for its challenging water hazards on 13 holes and numerous bunkers. While not particularly long, the course’s flat and exposed nature means players must be ready for variable weather conditions. A notable change this week is the switch from Poa Annua greens to Bermuda greens, favouring players familiar with southern courses.
Ricky Fowler leads the betting markets following his strong showing last year; however, fierce competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas makes his odds somewhat short. The field is fortified by a strong European presence, highlighted by Masters Champion Sergio Garcia and Tyrell Hatton. With the Masters just around the corner, players are eager to build momentum on this iconic stage.
