Here’s an exciting look ahead to this week’s ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, set in beautiful Rotterdam from 12 to 18 February.

As the inaugural ATP 500 Series event of the season, the indoor hardcourts of Rotterdam welcome the world’s top tennis talent for a thrilling week of action. Starting way back in 1974 with Dutch legend Tom Okker lifting the trophy, this tournament carries a rich history and memorable moments. Notably, Dutch hero and current tournament director Richard Krajicek claimed victory here in 2005, delighting the home crowd.
This year’s event holds extra significance due to the battle for the World Number One ranking. With Rafael Nadal returning to the court soon in Acapulco, Roger Federer has an opportunity to reclaim the top spot by reaching the semi-finals here in Rotterdam. Federer, a two-time champion here (2005, 2012), also eyes breaking Andre Agassi’s record as the oldest player ever ranked number one at 36.

First Quarter Insights
Federer’s quest to end the week as the world number one isn’t an easy path. He’s slated to face Ruben Bemelmans, known for his stunning upset against Lucas Pouille in Melbourne. Bemelmans also has a strong run with emerging Russian star Karen Khachanov in this quarter, plus a potential clash with Stan Wawrinka, who’s showing promising form after recent semi-final appearance in Sofia. Federer will face a tough but familiar test, pushing him to bring his best game.
Second Quarter Preview
Alex Zverev, a rising star with a mix of talent and frustration, returns to a best-of-three sets format here. His first hurdle is the experienced David Ferrer, followed by Joao Sousa in later rounds. Gilles Muller carries local hopes but faces off against strong Russian Danil Medvedev. Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet, fresh off a fine performance against Federer in Melbourne, could be a dark horse in this quarter with some real potential value for punters.
Third Quarter Outlook
David Goffin, seeded fourth, showed inconsistency recently and has a challenging first round versus Benoit Paire. Tomas Berdych, the 2014 champion and recent finalist, faces Mischa Zverev in a tricky opener. Berdych’s experience could shine through in what seems the least competitive part of the draw.
Fourth Quarter Focus
Lucas Pouille’s recent victory at the Open Sud De France cements his status as one to watch. However, he meets rising star Andrey Rublev in the first round. Grigor Dimitrov, the second seed, offers a strong challenge but has one of the clearest paths to the final. Many see the Bulgarian having a great shot at claiming the title, while Federer bids to regain the top ranking.
