We’re gearing up for the thrilling opener of the 2017/18 Ram Slam T20 Challenge where the Warriors will host the VKB Knights on Friday 10 November.
The Ram Slam T20, initially scheduled for next year, got moved up due to the unexpected delay of the T20 Global League and will now fire off from mid-November through to 16 December.
The debut match features last season’s surprise heroes, the Warriors, squaring off against the VKB Knights at the iconic St. George’s Park.
Match Details:
Warriors vs VKB Knights | Friday 10 November 2017 | St. George’s Park, PE | 18:00
Match Odds to Win
Warriors 92/100 | Tie 35/1 | Knights 92/100
Warriors
Replicating last year’s miraculous run will be a tall order for the passionate Warriors from the Eastern Cape. They may lack the deep pockets and individual star power of bigger franchises, but their unified team effort was outstanding.
Key batsmen Jon-Jon Smuts and Colin Ingram will lead the charge, with Ingram having smashed the most sixes (30) in England’s NatWest T20 Blast. Smuts, the top run scorer last season, aims to bounce back stronger and catch the eye of national selectors.
The Warriors’ bowling boasts all-rounders Smuts and Ingram alongside the dependable Andrew Birch and Sisanda Magala who took 17 and 13 wickets respectively last season, with Basheeru-Deen Walters known for his threat with the ball.
Standout bowlers Kyle Abbott and Simon Harmer will be vital, though skipper Malibongwe Maketa may have to manage his resources carefully to keep his squad firing.
VKB Knights
Despite two tough seasons finishing bottom of the table, the Knights are full of optimism heading into the new edition. Head coach Nicky Boje will call upon his CSA contracted players, rising stars, and seasoned pros who have gained experience abroad.
The likes of David Miller, Theunis de Bruyn, and Rilee Rossouw bolster the batting lineup, while Duanne Olivier and Marchant de Lange spearhead the pace attack.
New signing, leg-spinner Eddie Leie, impressed last season with 12 wickets and brings valuable T20 experience from the CPL. He’ll relish the chance to spin his craft on the Port Elizabeth wicket, which promises to offer some turn.
Verdict: VKB Knights 92/100
The Knights look stronger on paper and are expected to seize the advantage in the Eastern Cape. However, first-round games are notoriously unpredictable, so approach with caution. A small stake on the Knights could pay off.
