Race 2: LOVE THEME (9)
Jockey: K De Melo – Trainer: D Howells
LOVE THEME was a surprise package finishing 3rd on her promising debut over this course and distance behind the heavily backed winner Via Sacra earlier this season. The runner-up, Meet The Logans, has since won, boosting the formline. This daughter of Oratorio has likely improved during her 16-week break and is set to progress naturally. A star in the making!
Jockey: S Veale – Trainer: D Drier
Raced horses may hold the edge here, but PHILADELPHIA GIRL from the Drier stable is expected to make big strides after a moderate debut effort late last season over the same course and distance. Although she faded late due to inexperience, that formline has worked well. She would have strengthened over her 22-week break and is one to watch.
Race 5: REDCARPET CAPTAIN (1)
Jockey: B Lerena – Trainer: M Dixon
REDCARPET CAPTAIN continues to impress for his new trainer. He renews rivalry with SEVEN-TH PLAIN today, having been beaten narrowly into 3rd place on this course and distance in a thrilling finish back in mid-September. He now carries 1.5kgs less than his conqueror and, with a likely steady pace, he could turn the tables. The latter had a brilliant ride to win that race, and the runner-up Summer Sky subsequently secured a Cape Town win, adding credit to the form.
Jockey: K De Melo – Trainer: D Howells
HOLY FLAME gained invaluable experience on debut, running a strong 2nd behind a highly rated opponent in her comeback over seven furlongs last month. With an improved draw this time and an extra furlong to run, she’s expected to improve further. This Mambo In Seattle filly should arrive fitter after this break. Stablemate MIRWA is also showing progress on her third start and is drawn alongside HOLY FLAME.
Jockey: S Randolph – Trainer: D Kannemeyer
The lightly raced Cape visitor SOUTHERN SUN finished reasonably in his local debut over seven furlongs two weeks ago, but he’s expected to come on here with more fitness and the extra furlong should suit him. However, the competition is stiff.
