The Hyundai Tournament of Champions | 07 January – 10 January | Plantation Course, Kapalua

This week, 32 of the PGA Tour’s previous season winners jet off to the stunning Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, for the thrilling Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Unlike previous years where top players skipped this event, this year six of the world’s top ten golfers have confirmed their participation, promising four days packed with intense competition and breathtaking golf.
Headlining the tournament is the highly anticipated showdown between the world’s top two, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. However, on a course like Kapalua, surprises are always on the cards, so keep your eyes peeled for dark horses who may sneak away with the title.
The course is known for its ease relative to other PGA Tour venues, even though it stretches over 7,400 yards. Elevated tee boxes and fairways that allow the ball to roll extensively make it perfect for low scoring. The greens are considered on the easier side by PGA standards, so long hitters have an advantage, but putting will likely decide the winner. Look out for players with strong par-5 performances and excellent putting skills as these will probably be key to lifting the trophy.
Outright Winner Odds to Watch
- Jordan Spieth: 9/2
- Jason Day: 11/2
- Dustin Johnson: 15/2
- Bubba Watson: 9/1
- Patrick Reed: 10/1
Value Bets to Consider
Dustin Johnson (15/2 to win, 16/10 to place)
Though last season was a tad underwhelming, Johnson’s skillset keeps him safely in the top 10 in world rankings. Known for his explosive drives and steady putting, he’s no stranger to this course, having won here in 2013. Betting Dustin each way seems a smart move this week.
Kevin Kisner (18/1 to win, 39/2 to place)
While the top 10 dominate the betting scene, Kisner’s form and birdie-making ability shouldn’t be overlooked. The no-cut format means every competitor has a shot, and Kisner’s consistent long-range putting could pay off handsomely.
Graeme McDowell (25/1 to win, 11/2 to place)
McDowell’s history here includes a strong third place in 2011 and recent good form. His precise iron play and lovely putting stroke make him a solid candidate to upset the favourites.
Top Bet
Rickie Fowler (10/1 to win, 22/10 to place)
After shaking off the tag of ‘over-rated’ with three wins and stellar performances in all four Majors last season, Fowler looks primed to kick off 2016 with a bang. Facing Spieth and Day head on will be tough, but his all-round game and familiarity with high-stakes pressure make him the one to watch.
