As 2016 kicks off, the KFC Big Bash season is already delivering sensational individual brilliance and fierce team battles. As we approach the season’s critical phase, every point counts and teams are fighting tooth and nail to secure their spot in the play-offs.

Tuesday 5 January

Strikers 1/1
Draw 35/1
Scorchers 8/10

The Adelaide Strikers host the Perth Scorchers in a thrilling clash between first and third on the table at the Adelaide Oval. This marks their second meeting this season, with the Strikers taking the first encounter by four wickets. Since then, the Scorchers have bounced back strongly, clinching three straight victories.

Travis Head was the star of the show last time out for the Strikers, smashing an unbeaten 101 off just 53 balls. After a patient start, his spectacular innings turned the game, especially during the last overs with an explosive finish. Meanwhile, bowlers Adil Rashid and Jon Holland controlled the middle overs effectively to stifle the opposition.

The Strikers might not be considered the strongest on paper, but their collective effort and balance between powerful batting and sharp bowling have made them a formidable side this season. They could yet spring some surprises yet!

The Scorchers’ campaign has been impressive, especially given the absence of key players due to national duties and Nathan Coulter-Nile’s shoulder injury. Their recent demolitions of Melbourne Renegades and Sixers highlight their incredible form. Opening batsmen like Michael Klinger and Shaun Marsh have amassed huge runs, complemented by deadly bowlers such as Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff.

Despite my fondness for the Strikers, I reckon the Scorchers will continue their dominant run and take this win at 8/10 odds.

Wednesday 6 January

Stars 31/50
Draw 35/1
Hurricanes 5/4

The Melbourne Stars are shaking off a slow start with an impressive win over their rivals, the Renegades, in front of a record crowd of 80,883 at the MCG. Luke Wright’s unbeaten 109 off 63 deliveries anchored their chase perfectly, while the bowlers kept the Renegades’ score below par.

The Hurricanes will be eager to bounce back after a heavy defeat against the Renegades. Their batting showed promise with Dan Christian’s 58 from 40 balls, but it wasn’t enough to defend the total against the big-hitting Stars lineup.

The Stars’ recent victory could be the turning point in their campaign, and if they replicate that effort against Hobart, they’ll be strong contenders for the play-offs. Looking forward to seeing these teams bring the heat on Wednesday!
