Proteas Seamer Calls it a Day

Proteas pace maestro, Morne Morkel, has announced his retirement from all international cricket, concluding an incredible era of fast bowling as the four-match Sunfoil Test series against Australia kicks off in Durban this Thursday.

The 33-year-old has dazzled fans with his skill for over a decade, featuring in 83 Tests, 117 One-Day Internationals and 44 T20 Internationals. With a haul of 294 Test wickets including seven five-wicket hauls, he stands proudly as South Africa’s fifth highest wicket-taker in Test history. Across all formats, his tally boasts a monumental 529 wickets.

Speaking on his decision, Morkel shared, “It’s been an emotional and tough choice, but the time feels right to embrace a new chapter in my life. My young family and foreign wife have felt the strain of the demanding international schedule, and I must prioritise them. This move benefits us all moving forward.”

He added, “Wearing the Proteas jersey has been an honour. I’m deeply thankful to my teammates, Cricket South Africa, and all my supporters. I believe I still have plenty to offer cricket-wise and am pumped for what’s next. For now, my focus is solely on helping the Proteas clinch the series against Australia.”

Thabang Moroe, Acting CEO of Cricket South Africa, lauded Morkel’s stellar career: “On behalf of CSA, we extend heartfelt thanks to Morne for his outstanding commitment and contribution to South African cricket over the past decade. Since his debut in 2006, he has been a pillar for the Standard Bank Proteas, representing a golden era of fast bowlers that made our Test side a force respected worldwide.”

“Fast bowling at the highest level is among the toughest professions in sport. It demands skill, dedication, perseverance and immense courage to push through pain—the very qualities Morne has exemplified throughout his career.”

“Lastly, from all corners of South African cricket—the family, stakeholders and fans—we thank Morne for being an exceptional player and role model, making us all proud. Wishing him the very best in all his future endeavours.”
