SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler has openly acknowledged the urgent need to turn the tide as they prepare for a pivotal relegation showdown against AmaZulu at Atteridgeville this Wednesday.

The Matsatsantsa side have been struggling, registering just one win in their last 12 encounters stretching back to early December. Their woes deepened with a heavy 4-1 defeat to rivals Bidvest Wits over the past weekend.

Currently sitting 13th on the log, they are teetering just above AmaZulu, who are hot on their heels in 14th place. Both teams have gathered 21 and 20 points respectively from 18 games this season.

With both sides having a game in hand, Tinkler is resolute and desperate for a turnaround in fortunes.

“There are no excuses for our recent form – it’s been underwhelming. As a coach, I hate losing, but it’s part of the game,” Tinkler said. “I can understand the frustrations, but we’re determined to bounce back and hopefully secure a positive result this Wednesday.”

AmaZulu, on the other hand, seemed to have sparked a revival, thrashing SuperSport 2-0 just 10 days ago and following it up with two consecutive clean sheets, albeit in goalless draws.

“It’s a solid base to build on,” said Usuthu boss Cavin Johnson. “It’s early days to be concerned about standings as the margins are razor-thin; a couple of wins could completely change the narrative.”

SuperSport will be without key players Thabo Mnyamane, Mandla Masango and Bradley Grobler due to injuries, while AmaZulu are missing Mhlengi Cele. Additionally, Butholezwe Ncube faces suspension.
