Batsman faces bowler in front of packed cordon

South Africa’s pace sensation Kagiso Rabada is brimming with confidence as he talks about teaming up with fellow fast bowler Lungi Ngidi to create a formidable bowling partnership for the Proteas in the years ahead.

Lungi Ngidi, just 21 years of age, had an unforgettable start to his Test career, showcasing his talent by snatching nine wickets during the second Test against India in Centurion. His brilliant figures of 6-39 in the second innings were instrumental in steering South Africa to clinch the series.

Ngidi initially stepped in for the injured Dale Steyn, but his impressive performance surely indicates that the Proteas bowling attack remains strong even as veterans like Steyn (34), Vernon Philander (32), and Morne Morkel (33) gradually phase out.

At 22, Rabada has already made a massive impact, with 114 wickets from just 25 Tests. He previously held the top spot as the number-one ranked Test bowler before the Centurion Test, though currently positioned just behind England’s James Anderson.

Rabada shared fond memories of playing with Ngidi: “We were teammates in under-19 cricket and even toured India together, though he unfortunately had to cut his trip short due to injury. Having grown up playing alongside a friend makes this partnership even more special. I hope we keep building a strong combination on the field.”

Despite wrapping up the three-match series against India with a win already secured, Rabada and the Proteas are determined to finish strong as they prepare for the third Test at the Wanderers starting Wednesday.

Rabada, who plays his domestic cricket at Johannesburg’s Wanderers ground, expects favourable conditions for pace bowling, as the pitch there often offers movement that keeps batsmen on their toes.

He added: “The Wanderers pitch is known for producing results, with plenty of movement for bowlers. You never feel completely comfortable batting on it.”

Speaking about the challenge ahead, Rabada said: “Our focus is to defeat India convincingly. Every match is a battle and we aim for a series whitewash. The Indian team is full of talent, boasting formidable batsmen and skilled bowlers. They’re competitive and eager to make a mark here. We expect an intense, hard-fought game.”
