Responsible Gambling: Support in South Africa

Gambling can cause financial, relationship and mental-health harm. It should never be treated as a way to pay bills, clear debt or earn a dependable income. Choosing not to gamble is a valid option.

Where to find support

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation provides information and support resources. Visit its official website for current contact options. The National Gambling Board also publishes responsible-gambling and regulatory information.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. For a gambling-related account restriction, use the operator’s official support channel as well as independent support.

Warning signs

  • Using money set aside for food, rent, transport or debt payments.
  • Borrowing, hiding spending or trying to recover a loss with another bet.
  • Spending more time or money than intended.
  • Feeling unable to stop, or experiencing distress when trying to stop.
  • Gambling affecting sleep, work, study or relationships.

You do not have to wait for a crisis to ask for help. Support can also be useful for relatives and friends affected by someone else’s gambling.

Practical next steps

Stop depositing if gambling is causing harm. Ask the operator about a time-out, self-exclusion, account closure and limits. Find out which products and accounts a restriction covers; a restriction on one service may not automatically cover others. Consider blocking gambling payments or access where those tools are available, and involve a trusted person if that helps.

Limits are protective tools, not guarantees of safe play or profit. Changing a staking system does not resolve a loss of control.

If an adult chooses to gamble

Keep essential funds separate, decide in advance what you can afford to lose and set a time limit. Do not borrow, chase losses or gamble while distressed or intoxicated. Understand that promotional credits have conditions and that fast games can make spending difficult to track.
