Ajax Cape Town’s tough season hit another bump as they went down 0-1 to a determined SuperSport United side at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday.
SuperSport United dominated the opening half, creating multiple chances and should have entered the break with a more comfortable advantage. After the change of ends, Ajax Cape Town came out with renewed energy, but they couldn’t keep the pressure on, as Eric Tinkler’s squad managed the final 25 minutes with confidence.
Match Report
The home team started strong with early opportunities from Aubrey Modiba and Azubuike Egwuekwe, though the defender’s header sailed just over. The breakthrough came when Richard Boateng delivered a superb cross from the left flank, allowing Modiba to head home at the far post.
SuperSport pressed on, testing Ajax goalkeeper Jody February with a fierce shot from Fagrie Lakay, which he brilliantly saved, while Phala’s attempt went just over the bar. February continued to shine, blocking a low shot from Bradley Grobler just before half-time.
Ajax responded in the second half with urgency, coming close when Grant Margeman’s cross caused confusion in the box. However, SuperSport’s keeper Reyaad Pieterse pulled off an outstanding save from a powerful strike by Tashrique Morris around the 60th minute mark.
Despite Ajax’s efforts, SuperSport United reasserted control and closed out the match comfortably, bouncing back positively from their recent CAF Confederation Cup final loss to TP Mazembe.
