Wayne Rooney proved to be the match-winner for Everton, netting the decisive goal in a captivating clash that secured all three points at St. James’ Park.
First Half
Newcastle started strong, with Javi Manquillo causing early trouble for Everton through his wide runs. Ashley Williams was alert, clearing a dangerous cross in the sixth minute.
On the 12th minute, Everton’s Idrissa Gueye had a chance but narrowly missed after some slick build-up involving Aaron Lennon and Jonjoe Kenny.
Defensively, Ashley Williams thwarted Matt Ritchie’s efforts on 19 minutes, while Jordon Pickford handled a Ritchie shot comfortably moments later.
Ritchie then hit the post, but Everton struck quickly at the other end when Rooney calmly slotted home from close range after Karl Darlow fumbled a clearance.
Newcastle fought back, with Deandre Yedlin’s shot blocked in the 36th minute and Mikel Merino hitting the Everton goal frame shortly after.
The visitors ended the first half on the front foot, keeping Everton under pressure, but Pickford held firm, denying Dwight Gayle’s effort before the break.
Second Half
Newcastle pressed for an equaliser early in the second half, with Florian Lejeune coming close to connecting with a Mohamed Diame cross on 54 minutes.
Rooney tried his luck from distance but was off target, and Mason Holgate made a vital block against Jonjo Shelvey’s shot in the 63rd minute.
Despite their efforts, Newcastle couldn’t break down Everton’s organised defence, with Pickford making a comfortable save from Merino’s 67th minute effort.
At the other end, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s set-piece attempt went over the bar, and Karl Darlow tipped a Williams header behind to keep things tight.
The match wrapped up with Everton maintaining control, while Shelvey received a second booking deep in injury time for a foul on Gueye.
