
The showdown at the Nedbank Cup saw Cape Town City storm into the quarter-finals by clinching a narrow 1-0 victory against the in-form Orlando Pirates at the Cape Town Stadium.

The first half was a tightly contested battle, with Shonga coming close in the early minutes due to a lapse from Ralani but was unlucky with his strike hitting the post. Patosi also tested the Pirates’ goalkeeper with a threatening effort that was brilliantly saved by Mpontshane.
Thamsanqa Mkhize’s header was another close call but was well handled by Mpontshane, while defender Happy Jele cleared danger to keep the Pirates in the game.
Skilful runs by Lyle Lakay tested the Pirates’ defence, and Marshall Munetsi also nearly put the visitors ahead before the break, but both attempts sailed narrowly wide.
After the interval, Ralani’s precise cross found Patosi, who slotted home the winner confidently. The Pirates pushed hard for an equaliser, with Munetsi’s headed effort cleared off the line by the sharp Teko Modise.
The match ended in dramatic fashion as Shonga’s final attempt was denied by Stephens, cementing Cape Town City’s victory in this thrilling encounter.
