Roulette Odds Explained: European vs American Roulette

Roulette odds depend on the wheel and the bet. The payout can look the same across two tables even when the chance of winning differs. This guide uses standard European and American rules; specialised multiplier games can use different payouts.

European and American wheels

A standard European wheel has 37 pockets: 1–36 and a single zero. A standard American wheel has 38 pockets: 1–36, zero and double zero. At the usual payouts, those extra losing outcomes create different house edges.

Standard bet European chance American chance Profit payout
One number 1/37 ≈ 2.70% 1/38 ≈ 2.63% 35:1
Red or black 18/37 ≈ 48.65% 18/38 ≈ 47.37% 1:1
A dozen 12/37 ≈ 32.43% 12/38 ≈ 31.58% 2:1

Zero is not red or black. On the standard wheels above, the house edge is approximately 2.70% for European roulette and 5.26% for most American bets. The American five-number basket bet is an exception with a higher edge, about 7.89%.

A transparent expected-loss calculation

For a R10 red bet on a European wheel, expected net value is (18/37 × R10) + (19/37 × −R10) = approximately −R0.27 per bet. This is an average across the probability model, not a promise about any one bet or session.

French rules and special variants

La partage can return half an even-money stake when zero lands, reducing the theoretical edge on eligible bets to approximately 1.35%. En prison rules have their own settlement procedure. Confirm which rule applies at the actual table.

Lightning and other multiplier games can reduce standard payouts while adding special outcomes. You cannot assume their house edge from the wheel alone; consult the game’s published rules.

Why staking systems do not beat roulette

Doubling after a loss, following streaks or choosing “hot” numbers does not change the probability of an independent fair spin. Finite funds and table limits also prevent unlimited doubling. A short winning session does not prove a system works.

Use limits, not profit targets

If you choose to play, decide what you can afford to lose and stop at that limit. Never chase losses or use essential money.
