Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have successfully completed their swap deal, sealing moves to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, as confirmed by both Premier League giants on Monday.
The exciting swap was finalised following the approval of work permits for both players and after they underwent medical examinations over the weekend.
Sanchez, who was entering the last six months of his contract with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, had also attracted attention from Manchester City and Chelsea.
However, Manchester United’s financial strength won the race for the Chilean star, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract at the iconic Old Trafford.
“I am over the moon to join the biggest club in the world,” Sanchez said on Manchester United’s official site.
“I cherish the three-and-a-half fantastic years I had at Arsenal and hold great memories of the club and its fans.
“Playing at this historic stadium and working with Jose Mourinho is an opportunity I simply couldn’t refuse.
“I’m proud to be the first Chilean to represent United’s first team, and I aim to prove to fans worldwide why this club chose me.”
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was equally enthusiastic, stating, “Alexis is among the world’s finest attacking talents and will perfectly complement our youthful, talented attack.
He brings the ambition, energy, and character that define a Manchester United player, making our team stronger and fans prouder of their club’s rich history and prestige.”
Meanwhile, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is heading the other way to Arsenal on a long-term contract after finding limited opportunities at Old Trafford.
The Armenian midfielder played a key role in United’s EFL Cup and Europa League triumphs during his first season, but his appearances this season have been limited to 22 in all competitions.
“I’m thrilled to have this deal finalised and to be part of Arsenal,” Mkhitaryan expressed to the Gunners’ official website.
“It’s a dream come true, having always aspired to represent this great club. Now, I will give my all to contribute and make history here.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised Mkhitaryan, noting, “Henrikh is a very rounded player. He creates chances, defends effectively, covers ground excellently, and shows great commitment. He possesses all the qualities we desire.”
Jose Mourinho added, “I wish Henrikh every success and happiness at Arsenal. He’s a player we won’t forget, especially for his contributions to our Europa League win.”
